Urology concerns often cause patients not only discomfort and even pain, but also embarrassment. Many patients are reluctant to discuss urology matters with their own physicians, making it hard to secure correct treatment. Urinary incontinence, for example, often causes patients distress as well as embarrassment, even though it is a very common issue. Currently, up to 40 million patients across America suffer from this condition, which is treatable in many cases.

There are many factors which can cause urinary incontinence. Urinary urge incontinence (UUI), for example, is marked by a frequent and sudden urge to urinate, often leading to incontinence. This is often caused by neurogenic overactivity or detrusor overactivity (DO). Neurogenic overactivity can occur when the nerve signals from the spinal cord or brain are disrupted in some way, affecting motor control and usual bladder sensation. Detrusor overactivity occurs when the detrusor muscle does not work correctly or when nerve pathways are affected, both of which can lead to UUI and incontinence. In some cases, incontinence in caused by medications of even diet.

Treatment of urinary incontinence begins with a thorough examination and testing to rule out neurogenic disorders, Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), bladder cancer, and other medical conditions. As well, patients may need to be tested using a method known as urodynamics, which examines bladder function. In cases where an underlying medical condition is the culprit, treatment of that condition is necessary along with potentially additional treatments to treat the urinary incontinence itself. Treatments for urinary incontinence can include nonsurgical and surgical methods.

In cases of UUI and other causes of urinary incontinence, Anticholinergics is a type of medication that has been used with some success. Neuromodulation is another non-invasive form of treatment for urinary incontinence. This treatment improves neural pathways and thus bladder function in patients. Another new form of treatment for urinary incontinence involves injecting Botox into the bladder muscle. This helps improve stability and therefore reduces urinary incontinence. Even patients with severe urinary incontinence that has not responded to other forms of treatment may opt for surgical procedures known as surgical urinary diversion. A urologist and thorough testing can help patients determine the best treatments for their situation.
